It took a couple of years but the Bloodrayne sequel finally came out in 2007. This time, Rayne was played by Natassia Malthe (Dead or Alive, Elektra) who does a pretty decent job at taking the mantle from Kristanna Loken.
This second entry features Rayne visiting a small western town in the late 1800's, the place is being haunted by a vampiric Billy the Kid (Zack Ward) so she joins forces with the local gunslingers and townspeople in order to defeat him.
A very delicious low budget joint with enough good elements to support it. Liked it much better during this second watch. I honestly had zero issues with the handheld camera and the dimly lit scenarios were not dark enough to make it unwatchable, it’s distinctive if anything. It's an entertaining direct to video schlocky flick that works fine as a sequel, even if the only thing that really connects it with the last film is Rayne herself.
The leading vampire(hunter) is portrayed as a very routinary but likable action/western protagonist with enough badass moments to carry the otherwise normal film, specially with a very by-the-numbers script that offers zero legitimate drama and instead tries to go through the set pieces as well as it can.
She continues to be a solitary person who reluctantly joins forces with a group of people in order to defeat a common enemy, she’s also shown to be a little bit more heroic here, a side to her that was somewhat missing in the last film, for the most part at least, considering that in the first movie she was mostly driven by revenge and selfish motivations but still saved people from time to time, here she’s slightly more worried about the innocent.
There's a couple of weird moments, like the fact that Rayne gets sexually harassed two scenes in a row and there's a very vulgar attitude throughout the whole film but it manages to make it work overall. Besides, Natassia looks great in that black coat and hat, such a good design.
It's a decent time if you know what to expect and if you like these genre mash-ups or crazy movies in general. I do like the idea of an immortal vampire heroine going on different adventures throughout time, lots of potential there.
