Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 6: Lots of Danger, Lots of Decoys

In this episode, the girls are assigned to deliver a valuable prism to Caine Galaxy. However, there are about 20 decoys prepared and a self-destruct mechanism just in case the real one gets stolen. Why? Because of its value the prism is being tracked and hunted down by pirates. At least that's what Gooley tells them when he delivers the exposition in the very first scene of the episode, which actually works very well as an intriguing set up for the plot, the rest of the story relies on the info we got here.

Doesn't take too long for the Angels to get horny, at least Kei, who is also ready for any type of pirate that comes her way. They soon take notice of the activities of a criminal group known as The Devil Syndicate and decide to prepare. A suspicious ship tells them they will be checked but the girls see through their disguise and Kei takes Mughi along to beat them up.

Kei then meets a strange man who seems to know her already but she can't remember him, he's the leader of the guys trying to stop them. He turns out to be a childhood friend of Kei, named Kaia. He makes them cooperate, threatening them with the menacing weapons he has.

Kei gives him the name of the ship, uncovering their secret mission. However, the girls just figured out that they are just a decoy. Kaia goes after them, believing they are carrying the precious prism.

The girls engage in an interstellar battle, Kei goes to check on the shipment and discovers that they are in fact carrying the real prism, complicating things even further.

Kaia and his fleet approach the Dirty Pair, but Kei has a surprise for them, she retrieves the prism from the container and they send it to the bad guys with the self-destruct function activated. Once the girls flee, the bomb goes off and the villains blow up. The Lovely Angels have completed another mission using their wits and capabilities.

Another solid episode, perhaps without much action and the villain isn't as interesting as he could have been but he's not bad. The twists and the way it plays with expectations makes the story an entertaining watch. Add some good lines and inventive conflicts that go beyond shooting and punching people and you have another reason why this show is so good, it has a variety of action and story turns that keep it fresh.
