Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 8: Gotta Do It! Love is What Makes a Woman Explode.

We begin with a peppy Kei dancing to music, Yuri comes in telling her to turn it down but they are interrupted by a message that reads FROM LUCIA WITH LOVE, BILLY GALET. Kei is confused by it but the name clicks with Yuri and shocks her so much she drops her towel.

It is revealed that Billy was Yuri's childhood friend and boyfriend, she promised to see him after he finished building a ship named Lucia, so the two would get together and settle down in it. Yuri tries to resign the 3WA because of this, much to Kei's bewilderment and dismay.

The girls have an argument about it. Kei is wary of Billy but Yuri seems determined to fulfill her promise. Turns out Billy is an engineer and is presumably being held against his will at Poisonville, a dangerous place where several engineers have been taken into because of their knowledge in order to work for criminals. Deep in a Poisonville's forest there's a remote factory where the engineers supposedly are.

The 3WA doesn't want to get involved because nobody has actually paid them to go and retrieve the abducted engineers, however, the always reliable Kei pretends to be a client and pays for the mission to be done.

The girls are deployed to Poisonville and they infiltrate the compound looking for the kidnapped men. Yuri knocks out a guard and steals his uniform in order to reach the abducted engineers and look for Billy while Kei stealthily plants bombs inside the enemy's headquarters.

A couple of men are killed trying to escape and the girls reunite in order to plan their escape along with the engineers. Kei blows up the place and the shootout begins. Meanwhile, Yuri rescues the prisoners and searches for Billy in the process.

The animation here is a highlight because it's so smooth and complex for a TV budget. The girls kick and shoot the goons and they drop like flies. Kei gets shot during the battle but we discover she is wearing an enhanced suit that's bulletproof. Another creative addition that takes advantage of the show taking place in the future.

Kei attempts to find out where Billy is but she is informed of something quite disheartening. Billy decided to kill himself because he couldn't stand making machines that will murder people, so he created a device that will send messages to Yuri even after he passed away. Kei decides not to tell Yuri about it.

After helping the scientist get out of there, Yuri goes back to help her friend and partner. Kei informs her that Billy decided to wait until the real Lucia is done, clearly a lie to make her friend feel better. It's kind of a sweet move on Kei's part but also a sad one, considering that Yuri is not aware that her childhood sweetheart is dead.

The Lovely Angels still have to face off against the evil criminals, while they shoot their potent rockets at the bad guys Kei also confesses she was the one who called in to order the mission and hire the 3WA, angering Yuri. The gals then have a small argument, all while getting rid of the goon's ships in a sea of explosions, ending on a freeze frame of the girls charging against their enemies. Quintessential Dirty Pair episode.

Showing the Angel's softer side and creating an emotional backstory for Yuri, this episode isn't afraid to delve deeper into their leading ladies' sentimental side, exploring Yuri's past and love aspirations, as well as testing her relationship with Kei, who is a afraid of losing her best friend. But in the end, the girls show their loyalty to each other in their own manner; and while the status quo isn't changed, we won't see the gals in the same way after this episode.
