Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 9: Hire us! Beautiful Bodyguards are a Better Deal.

The Dirty Pair girls find themselves flying over Planet Plastone before they are quickly shot down by a fleet of enemy ships. They crash into the planet and disappear. The news quickly reached Gooley back at the 3WA headquarters.

Turns out this was planned all along, since the Angels need to infiltrate the planet's rival syndicates in order to solve the issues that put the planet´s newstone mines in peril.

The girls change into some stereotypical western disguises to fit among the crowd in the town they arrived at. Kei stops in the middle of their mission and gets something to eat, she is soon interrupted by the Montal Private Police, one of the organizations the Angels are there to infiltrate in.

The leader of the group menaces Kei and spouts some sexist remarks, but Kei swiftly shows them who's boss and expertly defeats some inhumanly gigantic minions. She takes the main guy hostage at gunpoint, turns out he's the son of the Montal group´s boss, she then offers her bounty hunting services to him, even threatening to go for Tokech, their rival, if he rejects her.

Yuri suddenly comes in and begins shooting them up, posing as a vengeful rival bounty hunter who is after Kei. The plan is to show off their capabilities while pretending to be in a feud so the enemy organizations buy their rivalry and hire them to fight against each other, and it works, Yuri shoots mercilessly and Kei has good tricks up her sleeve that convey her defense tactics.

The girls give each other information after being accepted, but things become complicated when a small goon spies on Kei and becomes aware of the Angels plot.

That night, Montel´s minions attack Tokech´s men and they have an explosive battle after rumors of Montel stealing a banned weapon circulate. Montel´s son imposes himself on Yuri but she predictably tosses him away like garbage.

The battle becomes more intense and the fake fights between Kei and Yuri do so as well, covering each other's asses while still pretending to go after each other, stopping their own troops from shooting at the other one.

We then find out Montal is smuggling an illegal beam weapon that if combined with the newstone material could possibly blow up the entire planet. Things become even more complicated after Montal´s son is kidnapped by their rivals. Tokech wants to talk things out and meets with Montal, who also finds out the real identity of the girls via the short goon who spied on Kei earlier. The two sides agree to meet early in the morning at the Newstone Mine, when informed of this Yuri begins to become suspicious.

Turns out the Lovely Angels were set up on a one on one duel to the death, all a trick to make them give away their charade. Due to Yuri´s intuition earlier all they have to do now is to wait for Mughi and the ship to arrive so they can escape. They begin quite a baffling brawl.

Since they don't want to hurt each other, what follows is a cheeky fight that resembles two sisters roughhousing more than a real fight, bitch slaps, topplings and face stretching ensues.

The girls ship, with Mughi and Nanmo, arrives in time and points it´s beam at the bad guys, giving the Angels the upper hand in this futuristic Mexican standoff. The Angels enter the ship and Kei slaps Nanmo in relief, which accidentally triggers a huge explosion, causing a chain reaction that blows up the entire planet.

The Dirty Pair has done it again. It´s been a while since we saw them completely destroy the location of their mission.

Incredibly engaging episode taking inspiration from  the Leone-like Spaghetti western tropes to the desert dwelling gangs of tough warriors seen in Mad Max and other wasteland pictures but all very light and adapted well into the Dirty Pair world and style. I enjoyed the false feud between the girls and the minor characters who were scumbags and dirtbags but they worked because of it. Great action sequences and fun writing all around.

Enjoyable from beginning to end.
