Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 10: What! We're the Heinous Kidnappers?

The ruler of Planet Caspia dies of a heart attack and his successor is young prince Heace, the old man´s grandson. The Lovely Angels are contacted (interrupting their daily chores) and given the mission to protect the young boy.

Planet Caspia is modeled after medieval traditions and culture, meaning that the next person in line to rule is the young boy, something lamented by his drug dealing uncle, Duke Ruber, who will want to get rid of the little guy if he finds out about the king's passing, so the news must be kept secret.

The girls predictably want to get with the guy but much to their dismay he turns out to be only 12 years old, with an IQ of 250, which is why he is at Mordolin University, the place where he will be retrieved by the Angels.

Duke Ruber bribes a nurse and finds out about the death of the monarch, setting his evil plans in motion. The Angels try to enter the prince ́s room by the window but an explosion ruins their plans, two machines then shoot at them and send them flying to the ground, they hide in some bushes thinking that the prince is dead.

This isn't actually the case though. He went to a disco with some friends and they find him, along with two other boys, while hiding. After trying to escape the Angels are chased by Ruber´s men, things seem awry for the gals but Kei manages to get rid of the goons, however, their ship crashes.

Things seem worse when they realize none of them have their communication devices and they are unable to call for their ship, meaning that they are stranded in the desert without help. The only solution is to walk to the nearest spaceport.

After escaping some enemy ships, the trio sleeps in a cave but they are discovered by some travelers. Because of a little girl named Rita who became suspicious of the pair, the girls are confused with kidnappers and now they are wanted women with a bounty on their heads.

The little girl pretends to help them, but she mostly just makes comments compromising the relationship the gals have with the prince. They ride on some giant bird creatures but they become the targets of bounty hunters and enemy ships. A shootout ensues.

The girls find themselves cornered by the enemies and dragged by a current, the prince manages to keep them safe by blocking the running liquid with rocks. The police arrive and the girls are relieved. This doesn't last for long as they are quickly arrested.

The prince arranges for the girls to be released as soon as possible and mentions that he is going on a date with little Rita. Kei and Yuri bicker as the camera zooms into Kei's leg, revealing that her communicator was there all along, she never lost it.

A funny little episode that kind of gets bogged down by it´s limited runtime. I wish they expanded more upon the ideas they barely touched upon, like the prince ́s coming of age, but they did it almost in a purely narrative and visual way (by his actions and the one almost final joke), which is neat, but still not as fully formed as it could have been. The antagonists were also kind of weak in their motives and the writers kind of forgot to give them much depth or screen time, which made it less satisfying when they were caught. Still, neat little punchlines and surprises all along, especially the last reveal.

Enjoyable outing but not top 10 material.
