Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 20: The Pursuit of Blues Is the BGM of Murder

An assassin known as Blues went missing, but the 3WA received info of his whereabouts at Planet Saladeen. We open the episode with a shot of the girls standing on a cliff and witnessing a volcanic explosion. Kei has a broken handcuff on her wrist. We go back in time to the start of the story. In their apartment, the girls receive a gift, a pair of explosive handcuffs that don't have a key and that blow up if the criminal tries something stupid like breaking them.

The girls begin their search for the assassin, arriving at Volken Hotel and then beginning their search. They take a ride from a guy mounting a giant beast, but they are then harassed by some biker gang members.

They arrive at a bar, looking for their criminal, but the pair only finds a group of gang members who start a fight with the Angels. The girls fight them with ease but there's one guy who is very powerful and makes Kei crash through a window with his enhanced mechanical arm, but this is to save her from the reinforcements the gang members called in to help them beat the girls.

The Angels escape along with the man who warned them about the incoming threat, the three of them are chased through the desert by a bunch of goons in their speeder bikes. The bad guys are about to use their bigger flying vehicle and its canons, but before Kei can shoot her gun, the strange man they encountered deploys a big arm weapon and blows up the enemy. This gives him away as Blues, prompting Kei to handcuff him to herself.

However, the girls dont have total control over him. When the Angels interrogate Blues he still has the guts to menace them with his potent arm gun, sparking a Mexican standoff. They come to an arrangement: Blues will finish this last job and the Angels will then take him to the authorities. Blues´ target is Melpot, a local rich guy who is holding a beauty contest in the area. Melpot threw Blues´ mother onto a volcano 30 years ago and plans for him to have a similar fate. The girls just kind of make fun of him for that.

After the winner of the beauty pageant is announced, Kei and Blues spy on Melpot as he shoots a commercial with the woman who won on a monorail. Meanwhile, Yuri ties up a monorail worker and steals her clothes in order to be close to the crew of the commercial, where she notices the gang members who attacked them before, discovering that they work for Melpot. Turns out Melpot plans to destroy the Volken Hotel by planting explosives on the monorail, hurting their insurance company, a rival company of Melpot.

The trio attacks the villains and defeats them, now they have to find a detonator and deactivate it before the monorail explodes. Blues sacrifices himself by blasting the handcuffs and stopping the bomb.

The Angels detach the wagon from the one with the broken breaks and use the ones that work. The train is stopped and Melpot´s plans are foiled. We end the episode with a shot of the girls standing on a cliff and witnessing a volcanic explosion, Kei has a broken handcuff on her wrist.

Dynamic and always moving, typical of the show. Well crafted sci-fi storyline with a poetic angle, about closure and tying loose ends, something expressed in the repeating images that open and close the episode. Action-packed and humorous. Really good episode.
