Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 25: Eek! The Boy in the Manor Is a Terminator

Episodes 25 and 26 of Dirty Pair were not aired on TV during the original show's run, they were instead released as a two episode OVA in 1987 under the title Dirty Pair: With Love From the Lovely Angels, but we are gonna count them anyways.

We begin with a very typical night with the Dirty Pair. Kei is fixing the air conditioner at their apartment, while Yuri is out on a date (the guy is dense and awful with women). What a way to spend their break from a case.

Kei is then called in to complete the case with another partner. The case involves counterfeit money threatening to cause an economic crisis. She is informed by Gooley that the culprit, Garou, is hiding in Tamul Island. What Kei doesn't know is that her new partner is actually just Calico.

Also, Yuri had a terrible time at her date, who never stopped reading. She comes back home only to realize that Kei isn't there anymore.

An elderly lady notices Kei and Calico coming to the island, so she tells Garou about it back at the manor. The old man welcomes the 3WA agents with a golden robotic dragon, which is taken down by a desperate Calico.

Yuri is then put up to date with the mission and receives more info: Garou had a son who killed himself six years ago, Mack, but he appears to be alive and well in the scenes showing the family back at the manor. His death is what motivated him to cause the economic crisis since it was the upper management at a bank that framed him for illegal activities, a weight he couldn't handle.

Back in the field, Kei is having trouble with Calico's inexperienced recklessness, ending with them being captured only for Yuri to arrive and search for them.

The old couple just wanted to get back at the bank for framing their son, but their actions had severe consequences for other people. Kei is put on a James Bond-Goldfinger type of laser trap that's going to cut her in two, but the old guy turns it off as he doesn't really wanna hurt her. Yuri infiltrates the manor and finds Mack, she thinks he's a ghost so she gets scared and shoots him, revealing Mack to be an android.

The robot goes crazy and begins attacking Yuri, but the blasts from her gun can't hurt him. Yuri fights the mechanical man with her weapon and manages to burn him. Calico accidentally activates the laser beam machine with Kei still strapped to the table, just waiting to be cut in half. However, Yuri arrives just in time and deactivates it.

All of the sudden, a mechanical skeleton arrives, it's Mack's skinless form. It attacks the girls and the couple, even almost strangling Garou. The Lovely Angels attempt to redo the Terminator ending but it's useless, so they simply grab some tools and disassemble the android. Very simple.

Calico wants to take the criminals to justice, but the girls wanna go soft on the old couple and they threaten Calico with telling Gooley of his bad field performance, which will hurt his chances of getting a promotion. At the end, the old man and woman are freed and so are the girls, who are ready to make the best out of their youth.

Entertaining, with lots of changes to the formula that give it fresh air, like Calico being part of a mission and being sloppy at it, to having the Dirty Pair be separated for most of the episode, it all makes the episode very dynamic and varied.
