Episodes 25 and 26 of Dirty Pair were not aired on TV during the original show's run, they were instead released as a two episode OVA in 1987 under the title Dirty Pair: With Love From the Lovely Angels, but we are gonna count them anyways.
The episode begins with Yuri catching Kei eating her cake in the middle of the night, calling her a thief. Yuri accidentally turns on a fire extinguisher and they mess around. A very typically playful opening that sums up their home interactions.
Meanwhile, in the Weapons Research and Development Lab, Gooley is ambushed and held captive by a mutiny being carried by a security captain named Marcus. So the Lovely Angels are predictably called in to help. Kei also has a really bad cold from last night's struggle in the fridge.
There's a major problem, the 3WA doesn't want to risk any more men and plans to let the villain's base self-destruct via volcano eruption in about 12 hours. There's also very few possibilities of making it out of there alive, so there's no rescue mission planned for Gooley. This means that the Angels' abducted boss will die there along with the enemy.
The girls dont wanna leave Gooley, so they sneak out during the night and rescue him. Their guns have been taken away, so they are gonna have to be stealthy and use every resource they have in order to infiltrate the bad guys' headquarters. They travel via a giant balloon but they are taken down, the girls then fight back, knocking down guards and using the guns they dropped to shoot the rest away.
They steal the guard's uniforms but Yuri ruins it by being scared of a spider and getting them captured. The girls get rid of the guards by putting spiders on their backs and throwing them out of the train they boarded. Marcus sees them from a hidden camera and derails their train, making them fall to the water. Good news is they are at least free now.
After some sexist comments from the villain, the girls arrive at the main compound. Here we see the iconic scene that features the girls distracting the guards with their attributes, with Kei flashing them even, only to beat them up and enter the security room disguised as guards. There, Yuri finds Gooley being held captive in the observatory.
The girls get into a fight since Kei wants to go to the observatory through the air shafts while Yuri wants to use the weapons hanger so that when the God Canon is brought out the floor will open. Kei and Yuri have their doubts but go along with their plans anyway.
Kei sees Marcus with Gooley but her cold gives her away when she sneezes. Marcus uses his whip to disarm and harm Kei but when Kei opens the floor Yuri appears from a hanger platform and shoots the villain.
The Lovely Angels engage in a shootout with the leftover guards, defeating them with relative ease. A dying Marcus then traps the trio in the volcanic base just minutes before doom comes.
Yuri then gets the idea to escape in a capsule that stores classified info. However, the weight capacity wont allow for the three of them to board it. Kei decides she will get out but Yuri wont leave without her and both of them stay behind.
Kei then plans to fire at the walls point blank to escape, but there's a high chance they will die because of that too. The place blows up and because of the giant cannon Kei falls down into the trees. She doesn't find Yuri, so she believes her to be dead. She begins a sad/humorous rant about how much she loves Yuri and how sorry she is she ate her cake earlier.
Turns out Yuri is under the piece of metal Kei sat on. Both laugh it off and run out of the place, continuing with their usual friendly insults.
An encapsulation of all the distinctive elements that make Dirty Pair a great show, the reckless and humorous banter and careless attitude by the protagonists, the exciting sci-fi action plots and the strong fighting spirit and fierceness of the heroines, it's all in here packaged into one rock solid outing. Agile, economic and thrilling, the best aspects of the series are present, one of the best episodes of the show. What a way to go out.
This concludes our Dirty Pair retrospective when it comes to the original anime series. The adventures of the Lovely Angels continue in movies, original video animations, comics and more series. So there's still a sea of material with Kei and Yuri, hopefully we will take a look at them in the future.
