Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 11: Ho Ho Ho, Dresses and Men Are Better New.

Yuri and Kei are tired of always having to work so they bother Gooley for some vacation time, he agrees and the Angels quickly finish their mission (in their usual messy way) so their off time can finally begin.

The girls unsuccessfully try to get dates for their weekend but none of that turns out well for them. They thankfully get invited to a birthday party by a friend, but Yuri decides to visit a mall in order to go to a boutique and get ready for the party. Kei isn't keen on Yuri´s new plans but she doesn't have much of an option.

While Kei waits for Yuri outside of a dress store she is ambushed by police officers who apparently confuse her for a man, a wanted man, no less. In fact, Kei has been displaying her tomboyish personality throughout this episode like when she was called a vulgar girl, the outfit she was wearing and the fact she's complaining about her partner's dress shopping also kind of add to that.

Both agents seem to resemble Moila and Pete, a band of criminals who the officers are after. They run to their ship but a bunch of kids are playing near it (they are pretending to be the Dirty Pair, so I guess they are kind of well known agents after all), the children accidentally are taken inside the ship, which makes the officers believe they are being kidnapped by the Angels.

The kids make a fool out of the Angels with their rudeness. Tanks and helicopters approach the ship, things are escalating in this unfortunate situation born out of a silly misunderstanding. Yuri and Kei engage in constant bickering, like a married couple, if you take into consideration their lack of luck with men and their close bond as girlfriends then perhaps we can add a sapphic subtext to their relationship, humorous or serious.

Kei decides to play along with the misunderstanding, getting rid of the kids by giving them up to the authorities and then escaping the planet. Everything seems to be fine until they realize there's still one little boy left, ruining their plans altogether. They are jailed but don't worry because Kei manages to get them out (illegally).

They happen to come across the real Moila and Pete, who are robbing a bank. The little kids are able to recognize the Dirty Pair who are then called in to help with the situation. The girls then battle the couple. It's funny how Moila and Pete are significantly older and rougher looking than the girls but they are confused with the Angels just because of their hairstyles and colors.

They quickly stop the robbers and rush to get to their party in time. The place looks wonderful, very beautiful and elegant. Once inside, they are greeted by Gooley, who tells them the last thing they wanted to hear: he invited them to a dinner with their friends, who are just a bunch of older people, hardly the young handsome dudes the girls wanted to meet. Tough luck.

The episode is very entertaining, it goes into a lot of places and gives us the thrills and comedy we expect but it feels like it´s building towards something, a payoff that never really comes to fruition because once the girls stop the robbers the last sequence feels added in as an afterthought. There was a set up and there was a resolution but there´s no engaging plot or dramatic storyline that can pull us through the episode.

The episode still has it´s highlights, it shows a more open world and acknowledges the public reaction and awareness of the Lovely Angels which was somewhat forgotten about until now, it also warms you up to Gooley, who is more than just a strict boss.

Adequate but lacking a substantial plot that can unify the comedy and the action in a whole.
