Dirty Pair (1985) Retrospective - Episode 17: Come Out, Come Out, Assassin

We open with a murder. Alan Jamis, crime consultant for the 3WA, is shot by an unknown person, presumably the killer he spent years investigating: Sundric. He managed to leave behind information on the criminal: Sundric will be on a flight from Planet Solomon. We first see a nun boarding the plane, who witnesses music superstar Bobbit Huey also getting into the plane and falling for him immediately. The nun of course turns out to be Kei in disguise. She also tags several possible candidates for being the killer: Marcus Brannigan (a political lawyer), Ralph Ray (an illustrator), Margaret Tyner (a nurse) along with her small son, and even Bobbit himself is a suspect.

Yuri is also there posing as a flight attendant. Suddenly, the captain goes insane and injures the co-pilot. Yuri blasts her way into the cockpit but the captain shoots himself after leaving the plane with a course that goes directly into a black hole.

Since they can't do anything to stop the program, and since the Angels were already discovered, Yuri pleads with Sundric to reveal himself, hoping he can cancel the course and save their lives.

Yuri suggests that everyone goes to a secluded block and stay there while they allow for the killer to undo the coding in private and without revealing himself as everyone else is in their block. Before they can allow the killer to do it, Ralph tries to escape via shuttle but Yuri warns him it is dangerous but he doesn't listen. The ship blows up.

After the incident they have no choice but to continue with the plan, the Angels put some cameras to catch Sundric but Yuri realizes that it would be easier for Sundric to simply kill the 3WA agents first since they are the biggest menace and then fix the ship's course. Soon enough, Yuri gets attacked by a shadowy figure. However, she wasn't targeted by Sundric, it was another passenger. Kei at the same time gets caught by surprise by another possible assassin.

Turns out Bobbit is attempting to get it on with Kei as he fell for the Angel and actually managed to see through her facade. She gets him off of her. He seems to be too physical for a normal citizen and his attitude is suspicious, but there's no time to guess because he admits it: Bobbit is the super assassin Sundric. However, kei doesn't fully believe it as he is clearly being flirty.

But we are not done yet! Here's another complication: Margaret, the redheaded lady, is seen in the cameras and the agents now suspect she is Sundric. Once cornered, the lady confesses, turns out the captain was the father of the child she is with, he left her after she fell into a drug addiction. The captain committed suicide and drove towards the black hole because he saw the two of them and recognized them, not because of anything done by Sundric.

As they approach the black hole, the Angels try to guess the password but a question appears on the computer: “Who does the cute sheep belong to?” The answer is in the song the little boy is playing near them, Mary Had a Little Lamb. This is useful but now there's another problem: a self-destruct mechanism has been activated. Kei rushes to deactivate it.

Kei believes the killer to be Marcus but in reality he´s the geekish Ralph, who disguised himself as Marcus after killing him. He shoots Kei off the ship but the explosive blows him up instead of the spaceship. Kei thinks she is doomed but Bobbit comes to rescue her.

Not a solid enough episode in my opinion. There's too many curveballs and most of them never feel truly earned or well implemented into the plot. I do like how everyone could very possibly be the killer because of their profile and motives but the characters are mostly a bore to me. Most of its narrative tricks feel rushed or half baked because of the time constraint and the fact that it barely gives the Angels time to shine. Not a horrible episode but probably my least favorite of the bunch.
