Linda Lin in Drunken Master (1978)

Linda Lin (Ying Lin)

The classic martial arts film Drunken Master starring Jackie Chan features a great fight scene, among many others, involving Chinese actress Linda Lin showing off her moves on a young Jackie Chan.

In the movie a fictionalized Fei Hung attempts to use his moves on a local girl but her mother surprises him and beats up the mischievous protagonist. Later on, Fei finds the two women chatting with his father and is informed that the old lady is his aunt and the girl his cousin. This is a key scene because it’s one of the motivations for his father to send him away, it also shows that Fei, while talented, isn't an all powerful martial artist and needs more training.

I think Lin might have some of the best moves in the entire movie and it’s certainly one of the most interesting sequences in wuxia cinema because you don't often see a much older lady beating a young guy. A truly memorable scene.

Lin appeared kicking ass in a few more movies like Drunken Master’s semi-sequel Dance of the Drunken Mantis (1979), Lackey and the Lady Tiger (1980) and The Ring of Death (1980) but her career was short and relegated to incidental or secondary roles.

However, we will always remember her from this highlight in one of the most popular martial arts movies of all time.
